CLIENT: National Treatment and Rehabilitation Center | YEAR: 2008
The national center for the treatment and rehabilitation of children sick with spina bifida and hydrocephalus is a socio-medical institution which is composed of two complementary buildings:
The Medical Center, which covers post operatory treatment and rehabilitation of children sick with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. The Medical Center offers psychological, social and methodical counseling of families and personnel from social care institutions which tend to children sick with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.
The Hotel - lodging for group care, which is an environment adequate for the age and profession of retired people from the medical profession. The retired medical people are involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of children sick with spina bifida and /or hydrocephalus, and may provide counseling and training for people who care for such children.
The center is located in Joita commune, Bacu village, approximately 10 km west of Bucharest, Romania. It can be accessed via county road 61 Dragomiresti-Joita, in a beautiful area which has real perspective to become a residential suburb of Bucharest.
The building design is composed of two independent programs whose origin is that of healing and living. The form of the building is representative of these two functions: the Center and Hotel. As these two entities coexist, opportunities to share areas and amenities within the project became clear. The restaurant and kitchen facilities, lounges, and many outdoor spaces are planned for both uses to share and encourage interaction and ultimately support. The designers recognized the need to invite participation and interaction from both the Center and Hotel and the building form is a representation of that vision.
