North Corktown

CLIENT: Corktown Community Development Corporation
LOCATION: Detroit, MI
YEAR: 2002

The master plan for North Corktown grew from a close collaboration between McIntosh Poris Architects, neighborhood stakeholders and the Greater Corktown Economic Development Corporation.

The Plan for North Corktown set forth a framework for mixed-use development comprised of residential, commercial, retail, civic and recreational spaces. Specifically, the Plan sought to prevent displacement, encourage the renovation of existing structures, increase density and identify opportunities for in-fill development.

Elements of the Plan include reestablishing the Western Market and the creation of a mix-use district along Temple and Trumbull. The plan is currently being implemented. In the years following the implementation of the plan, North Corktown has attracted many new residents and become one of Detroit's most interesting neighborhoods with urban farms and art projects taking advantage of empty lots.
