CLIENT: Lofts at Grinnell Place
LOCATION: Detroit, MI
YEAR: 2006-2007
The couple moved from their Ferndale home to a former Grinnell Bros. Piano Company warehouse in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. Grinnell, a sentimental name for many Detroiters, was a music company that had its flagship retail store on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit. The 1920s-era warehouse on Brooklyn Street was redeveloped with its vintage assets intact. Each residence has a balcony, contemporary finishes, and 10-foot windows that provide expansive views of downtown and the Ambassador Bridge. The Brecks say, "the timing was right for a move." Their previous home was traditionally furnished, and they were seeking a cleaner, more modern look. For help, they looked to the late Doug McIntosh of McIntosh Poris Architects, an architecture and design firm in Birmingham. Together with a team of designers they selected fixtures and custom finishes, including a stainless steel backsplash and den bookshelves.
