The design concept of this Franklin, Michigan residence came from a series of intersecting volumes, each containing specific programs that together create a dynamic form. We organized the plan around the outdoor patio and pool as it becomes the focal point with the built structures wrapping around. This also provides an ample amount indoor/outdoor living and natural light, with floor to ceiling glass windows and doors.
The design also evolved as an example of the private vs. public dichotomy arrangement of the residence. Support areas such as the laundry, pantry, and powder room are located near the garage while family gathering spaces are very open. The ground floor master suite has its own wing. We chose ribbon windows with a high sill height to reinforce privacy facing the street. The entertainment room is the only exception with tall windows along the entrance revealing a view into one room of the home. This reduced the privacy aspect to make the entry more inviting and balanced the tall glass stairwell adjacent to the room. We designed a covered walkway at the entry to protect residents and guests from the elements. It is flanked above by timber beams to create a pergola that projects shadows to the surrounding surfaces throughout the day. The exterior materials are thermally modified wood, metal panel, and brick.
